In this area of central Vancouver Island, however, we have six golf courses that cater to every possible golfing need, from the spectacular Fairwinds Golf and Country Club at the southern extremity of our oceanside paradise to Arrowsmith Golf and Country Club at the northern end. All in all, there are five 18-hole courses and one 9-hole layout. Year around you will find spectacular scenery, truly fine golf courses, friendly helpful staff and green fees to suit every wallet. The highest green fees here are less then half of what you would pay at a municipal golf course in Hawaii, and the average of all the ticket prices is about a quarter of what you have to pay south of the border. EAGLECREST GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB Eaglecrest has a history worth putting about. Winding through the Eaglecrest section of Qualicum Beach, the course is not too lengthy, but is challenging. It requires accuracy off the tee on a number of holes since the area is quite thickly wooded. If you hit a straight ball, the course can be a scorer's dream. Eaglecrest is slope rated at 122 from the Blue tees, 120 for White and 115 for the Red for men. for women it is 123 from Red and 123 for the ladies "Inner nine". GREEN FEES 18 Holes $ 32 13 Holes $ 20 MORNINGSTAR GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB Morningstar's awesome challenge beckons. This course is truly a test for even the best of golfers. In fact, the Canadian Tour Qualifying School was held here each May for the last five years. Morningstar is a resort-type golf course and will challenge the very best players. The course is slope rated 139 gold tees, 134 Blue, 129 White, 135 Red. GREEN FEES 18 Holes $ 23 9 Holes $ 16 FAIRWINDS GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB Fairwinds: where swans soar with eagles. You feel so comfortable on the Nanoose Peninsula in the middle of all this splendor that nature bestowed on us. Swans glide by on natural lake, eagles soar above you and you'll likely see all kinds of flora and fauna during your round. Fairwinds is an exceptionally fair course. You fell very confident on the first two holes and then are eased into the tougher ones as the game progresses. The low handicap players will be in the 70s if they play well. There is, however, enough water and strategic bunkers to keep even the best players honest. The course is slope rated at 123 from the Blue tees: and 129 from the Red. GREEN FEES Monday through Thursday $ 39 Friday, weekends and holidays $ 42 QUALICUM BEACH MEMORIAL GOLF COURSE QB Memorial: Nine of the Island's best. The Qualicum Beach course may be the best nine-hole course you will find anywhere on Vancouver Island. The "Grand Old Lady" looks deceptively easy and measures only 2,778 yards. The tourist who yields to the temptation to play golf here inevitably returns again and again. Under the fairways are huge deposits of sand and this is the reason that play is often possible here when other courses are closed. Slope rating for men is 107 White and 111 from the Blue tees. for women the rating is 116. GREEN FEES 18 Holes $ 29 9 Holes $ 17 GLENGARRY GOLF LINKS Glenngarry's views take your game to new levels. Standing in front of the clubhouse at Glengarry you look up at the glorious sight of Mount Arrowsmith in the background and realize that this is a place to relax and enjoy what is laid out for your golfing pleasure. Glengarry golf Links is usually played in less than four hours, and for this reason is a very popular course all year round. the course is slope rated at 92 from the White tees for men, 99 White for women, and 96 blue for men. Arrowsmith was designed with everyone in mind and almost anyone who has played here would agree. Make no mistake about it, this is a quality layout from the word "go". YOUR SEASHORE GUIDE For those who go out on the water in search of fish, here is a general activity calendar, by month. It does not specify or attempt solunar periods: fish when the urge arises. JANUARY Fish deep for good 6-10 pound winter "feeder" Springs from Nanoose to Deep Bay. Use herring if available or # 4 Tom Mack, Krippled K, White and Green Hot Spot or White Hoochies. FEBRUARY Drift deep mooch holes where herring overnight, near bays and coves. use plug-cut herring, large herring strip or, if jigging, use large strikers and buzz bombs. If trolling, troll deep and slow for Springs up to 20 pounds that will be cropping on schools of ripening herring. MARCH Same as above but try one line shallower until you find the fish. Bluebacks will be showing frequently but watch their size. Large Springs will be common at the deep hole areas. APRIL Small Springs to 5 pounds will be taking anything that looks like food, but you should catch "deepers" to 10 pounds with ease. Only take what you can use. Bluebacks are larger (gaining a pound a month) and are readily taken on red or pink hot spots and herring strip. Good clamming tides on successive days; check for restricted areas and limits. Use a garden or hand fork. Zero tide to 4.5 feet should produce good Littleneck and Manila Clams. Large Butter Clams are common in most gravel areas also. MAY Excellent fishing of all varieties, at all depths. Bluebacks and small Coho are now plentiful. Fish with pink or red lures above the tidal flow line at all depths in our area. Note Plankton feed in the water and on weed in this period...fish are gorging on it. Clamming excellent for successive days on good low tides. JUNE/JULY/AUGUST Fishing excellent at any depth. Good clam tides. Coho and Springs everywhere. Use Hot Spots, Hoochies, herring and hardware. Mooching and jigging with Buzz bombs and other painted lead lures, such as Strikers, excellent everywhere that bait schools (e.g. bottom of Denman/Hornby, French Creek, Sangster/Jenkins/Finnerty Group, Winchelsea, etc.) In August try buck tailing with colored lures and flash tail. SEPTEMBER Northern Coho to 15 pounds caught jigging. Change color of lure until successful. Early morning and late afternoon takes good fish buck tailing. Springs up to 50 pounds milling at rivermouths taken on Buzz Bombs and Strikers. OCTOBER Sea-going fish ripening and hard to influence, persevere with all methods of fishing. Jigging best with Buzz Bombs, etc. The old chum can be taken trolling pink lures. Fish deep for Springs and fat late northern Coho. NOVEMBER A few good Springs around-deep. Grilse from early year hatchery releases now very common. Release long with undersize Springs. Watch the weather at all times; southeasterlies last several days; don't venture out too far. DECEMBER Repair your tackle, winterize your boat, sharpen your hooks, and dream of next year.
